Cardiovascular Engineering

Project Background

Acutus Medical developed the AcQMap device to address the challenges and limitations associated with traditional cardiovascular imaging technologies in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias, particularly atrial fibrillation (AF).

Before the development of this device, traditional mapping systems relied on technologies such as electroanatomical mapping (EAM) and fluoroscopy. While these methods provided valuable information about the heart’s electrical activity and anatomy, they often lacked the resolution and accuracy needed for precise localization of arrhythmia sources. 

Acutus Medical recognized these challenges and embarked on a project to develop a mapping system to overcome the challenges. This system would be capable of providing real-time, high-resolution imaging and accurate mapping of the heart’s electrical activity.

Cardiovascular Engineering Project Features

The resulting AcQMap system integrates ultrasound technology with advanced cardiovascular mapping algorithms to generate detailed 3D images of the heart and map its electrical activity accurately. This allows clinicians to identify and target arrhythmia sources more effectively during catheter ablation procedures.

The AcQMap device features high-resolution ultrasound cardiovascular imaging, simultaneous electrical mapping, 3D reconstruction capabilities, real-time feedback, integration with navigation systems, and more.

The Role of FC Engineering Services

  • Hardware Design: FC Engineering Services took part in the design of the physical components of the AcQMap devices, such as the circuit boards, to ensure that they met the right size, weight, power usage, and reliability.
  • Software Development: FC Engineering Services also helped with the development of the cardiovascular imaging software including real-time data processing, visualization interfaces, and user controls for compatibility and seamless integration.
  • System Integration: FC Engineering Services also worked on integrating the hardware and software of the device, designing interfaces and protocols, and conducting rigorous tests to ensure functionality and reliability.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Last but not least, we also assisted Acutus Medical in navigating the regulatory requirements, conducting risk assessments, preparing documentation, and ensuring compliance with standards such as ISO 13485 and FDA regulations.
